We have been hearing about Samsung’s much talked about foldable phone for years. Evidently, the Samsung foldable phone, dubbed as Galaxy X aka Galaxy F, has been delayed. But now, Samsung has suggested the much-awaited smartphone will be coming soon and that the company is going to aggressively push the foldable phones.
Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of Galaxy Note 9 launch, Samsung CEO DJ Koh said the company was “focusing on developing innovations that will be genuinely accepted and liked by consumers” for the foldable phone. He also stressed that the company was planning to launch the device sooner than expected as it “didn’t want to lose the world’s-first title”, reported Zdnet.
While the concept of foldable phones have been around for roughly a decade, Samsung’s DJ Koh in 2016 for the first time acknowledged the company’s interests in building phones that can be folded in half. He also hinted that the phone will not just be a concept but will also hit the commercial market.
“We wouldn’t have started [the project] if it was a going to be a one-time thing,” the CEO added.
Samsung initially aimed at launching the Galaxy F foldable phone in 2018 but has reportedly delayed it to 2019. “We don’t want to just sell a couple of the phones. We want it to be mass-ready and at a technological level where people will say it is a well-made phone,” DJ Koh said in September 2017.
Samsung’s rush to launch the world’s first foldable phone comes amid reports that Apple, Huawei, and LG Electronics are also working on commercial foldable devices. Apple has already filed a patent for a device that could be folded like a paper. LG also has filed for a patent for a tablet-like screen that could be folded vertically. According to the patent, LG’s foldable device will be compact and will fit in a user’s shirt pocket.
